Fatguys Banner - Vert, a tankard Or.

At Times I Thank God for the SCA

(by Gorlan of the Red Lands, 1999)
(Tune: "In America" by ???)

    Chorus:
I like it here in the SCA
Ladies in bodices make my day
All day I'm fighting at night I play
At times I thank God for the SCA

Fighting in armor is so much fun
Then feasting and dancing when that is done
Singing at campfires or pounding drums
There's a little of something for every one

    Chorus:

For those who like art, there's so much to do
    Calligraphy, Heraldry, and cooking too
Or learning to make your home brew
You will find others who like these things too.

    Chorus:

We get to play with our pointy steel
Knives, swords, and daggers from head to heel
We like the way that they look and feel
It helps to add to our sex-appeal

    Chorus:

And when we gather for a large war
Hundreds of warriors and fights galore
At the end of the day you may feel sore
But really who could ask for more?

    Chorus:

You can dress as a peasant or a princess
Scotsmen and Mongols wear even less
Cloaks, capes, or court garb to look your best
Where else can you be macho while in a dress?

    Chorus:

We all work hard to be courteous
Be at our best around folks we trust
Feel safe to be giving and generous
Modern day problems don't worry us

    Chorus:

If you interested in older days
You should check out the SCA
It is a fine way to spend you days
Yes, I thank God for the SCA

    Chorus:

History. The Story Behind this Song

The title is a phrase heard quite often around Fat Guy Encampments. In these days of Political Correctness, if you compliment a lady on her appearance, you can get slapped with a harassment suit. In the SCA, you can treat a lady like a Lady without that fear. Some have raised flirting to a high art, again in a safe environment. Most Lords in the SCA know how to behave around a Lady. As for the rest of the song, I just tried to capture some of the fun and spirit of the SCA.
