Sedition
(by Gorlan of the Red Lands, 1999)
(Tune: "Tradition" [from "Fiddler on the Roof"]) (by Jerry Bock and Sheldon Harnick)
Who day and night
Will look to take offense at
Anything that’s said with which they don’t agree
And who will always
Take it out of context and cry sedition on the list
The life-less, the life-less
Sedition
Sedition, Sedition
And treason
Who is it who revels in politics
Who play their tricks
And think they’re slick
Who is it that really make us sick
And wish that they would go play somewhere else
The Clue-less, the Clue-less
Sedition
Sedition, Sedition
And treason
Who is it that’s always the first to complain?
But will do nothing
To fix the same
Who is it who criticizes other folks
For not doing what they are unwilling to do
The Worth-less, The Worth-less
Sedition
Sedition, Sedition
And treason
Who is it who always
Need some recognition
To feed their ambition for titles that they want
Who is it who works hard
Only at the precise time
When they can be observed by peers
Hat-chasers, Hat chasers
Sedition
Sedition, Sedition
And Treason
Who is it that always
Gossips about others
Telling lies and rumors when you back is turned
But when they are confronted,
Deny they ever said it
And they must have been heard wrong
The Spine-less, the Spine-less
Sedition
Sedition, Sedition
And treason
Who is it that hate this
Song and all it stands for
Label it a droll bore, or just another filk
Who cannot fathom,
What the song is saying
Because it is not serious enough for them
The Humor-less, the Humor-less
Sedition
Sedition, Sedition
And Treason
The Story Behind this Song
A while back another Lord started a filk he titled "Sedition and Treason" done to the tune of Tom Lehrer's "Pollution". He only wrote one verse and I was going to try and finish it, but this came out instead. Not as humorous as I would have liked. Each verse is based upon things I have observed or been told recently. In one case I was asked to mediate a case of gossip between the gossiper and gossipee. Another from some hateful "Targeting" said by a Hat Chaser about another. Another verse came from one Lord criticizing a group of others for not doing something that he also would not volunteer for. As fun playing in the SCA is, these things can get me down at times. Writing this one helped get some of it out of my system, but I don't think I will be singing it too often. Even with the humorous slant, it depresses me.
