Fatguys Banner - Vert, a tankard Or.

Red Belt, White Belt

(by Gorlan of the Red Lands, 1999)
(Tune: "Sunrise, Sunset"[from "Fiddler on the Roof"])
(by Jerry Bock and Sheldon Harnick)

Is this the young lad that I Squired?
Laying waste in the Grand Melee
I don’t remember teaching him that shot
    Is he rea-dy to-day?

    Chorus:

      Red Belt, White Belt
      Red Belt, White Belt
      It’s sometimes hard to say
Is there anything left to teach him?
Do we Knight him and let him go his way?

I remember when he gave to me his fealty
So much energy and joy in every fight
Am I holding him back, just to keep it
Is he ready to be a Knight?

    Chorus:

His courtesy is all that you could ask for
His service to the realm has been many fold
I just wish he wasn’t such a young man
Or am I just feeling old?

    Chorus:

I’ll have to bring it up with the other Knights
To see if they agree or disagree
My vow is telling me he’s ready
But I may be too close to see

    Chorus:

History. The Story Behind this Song

One major piece of gossip around the SCA is who will be the next one to be Knighted (or made a Laurel or Pelican). Some choices are obvious; some are not. Many times folks speculate why is it taking so long for some. Being an old timer, I’ve picked up more than a little of how the process works. In general, the different peerage circles, will err on the side of caution, if here is any doubt. This song started out with the first verse. I try not to do serious songs, but with this song I could not help it. Some songs truly write themselves, and I found myself in trapped in the mind of an aging Knight asking himself his young Squire was ready or not. Not having been the position, I am not sure if I got it correct or not, but it feels right. In any case, it gives me something polite to sing at vigil fire.
