A Pelican Can
(by Gorlan of the Red Lands, 1999)
(Tune: "The Candy Man" [from "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory"])
(by Anthony Newly and Walter Scharf)
Who can run an Event?
Where everything goes right
Lots of daytime fighting and a 12 course feast at night
A Pelican can
Yes a Pelican can
Who can take a subject?
That makes most gentiles scream
Resolve all the issues in the Spirit of the Dream
A Pelican can
Yes a Pelican can
A Pelican Can
Because They’re Supermen
Truly Peers without Peer
A Pelican’s a Slave
To the SCA
They keep Dream alive and running
Without Deceit, Guile, or Cunning
Instead they’re Honest and Forthcoming.
Who can run a Kingdom
And Autocrat a Major War
Balance all the Books, and still get to sleep by 4
A Pelican Can
Yes A Pelican Can
Who can see the Future?
An Read a Monarch’ Mind
Baby-sit the Hobbits and Have court start on time
A Pelican Can
Yes A Pelican Can
A Pelican Can
Because They’re Superwomen
Truly Peers without Peer
A Pelican can take
Any Group’s Mistake
And Fix it as easy as doing the Dishes
They ask for no reward or riches
Why they can even grant your wishes
Yes a Pelican Can
Only a Pelican Can
The Story Behind this Song
One of the Three Peerage Orders in the SCA is the Pelican. This is given for Service to SCA. While most people expect a lot from the Peerage, I think the Pelicans get the most abuse. It is amazing what some folks expect from this group. This song pokes fun at some of those expectations.
