Hat Chasers
(by Gorlan of the Red Lands, 1999)
(Tune: "Its all about T*rds" by Oscar Brand)
Chorus:
Tur-a-la, tur-a-lay
Look out the hat chasers are coming this way
Sing-along, Drink some beers.
It’s funny to watch, but its h*ll for the peers
In the SCA, wherever your at
You will come across all kinds of strange pointy hats
Or Folks with medallions or belts that are white
They are your peerage, and you should treat them right
Chorus:
But there’s one group of SCAdians who take this ideal
And go to extremes that are truly unreal
You can call them courtiers or toadies or pests
But Hat Chasers is the label the fits them the best
Chorus:
If you’re new to hat chasing, the games is quite fun
Just watch the brown nosers trying to get one
They’ll ask any hat if they need something done
But the rest of us, to them, are just title-less scum
Chorus:
The peerage cannot seem to avoid these pests
And they find that their courtesy is put to the test
At least for the Knights, some relief can be found
Out on the field pounding them into the ground.
Chorus:
It becomes worst of all, for a peer on a throne
The hat chasers just cannot leave them alone
Except for the rare peers who do not have lives
And enjoy the Brown nosing the chasers provide
Chorus:
So when all is said and when all is done
Hat chasers are really impressing no one
They may be amusing if watched from afar
But if they come close, grab the feathers and tar
Chorus:
The Story Behind this Song
Hat chasers both amuse and disgust me. I never have understood the mind sets of either those that suck up or those who allow themselves to be sucked up to. Hat chasers are normally doomed to failure. Even if they gain the titles they are coveting, it does not gain them the respect they assume will come with the titles. Some of most hateful things I have ever heard, has been from one hat chaser talking about another. There is nothing wrong with a little ambition, and a majority of status in the SCA is gained by getting titles. But what the Hat Chasers consistently fail to recognize is that today's "Title-less Scum" may be tomorrow's Peer. When someone who would not give them the time of day, all the sudden is trying to be their best friend, it's a little obvious.
