The Tale of the Greifenthal
(by Lord Gorlan of the Red Lands, 1998)
(Traditional, or spoken)
One season Albion's children slept
Even Black Dragons' must rest
When in the skies came a Griffin
He came upon a blood quest
For some knaves had stolen his treasure
While he hunted down a far road
You only had to steal his treasure once
To get this Griffin P.O'ed
With claw and beak and fearsome cry
He slew all those that he found
And when the Chivalry gave him chase
He'd take wing, and leave them on the ground
So the King called out for his archers
To remove this beastly pest
The heralds cried throughout Drachenwald
Come to Greifenthal, and stop him at his nest
The archers came with bow and shaft
In answer to the herald's cry
Brave of heart and strong of arm
The archers watched the sky
The Griffin came with piercing shriek
That caused the bravest to freeze
He plucked the herald from the field
And dashed him into the trees
But on his next pass the archer's held
And shafts flew in the air
The Griffin was now a porcupine
And he dropped with a cry of despair
So once again the land was safe
Thanks to arm and bow
This is one bard who knows his audience
I hope you enjoyed the show.
The Story Behind this Song
A shameless catering to the crowd. At the Quest of Griffins Hoard, they
had a Bardic competition that had to, in some way, be about griffins.
This was primarily an Archery Event. Only two others had brought armor and
one of them had to leave early to drive a sick lady home.
So I had some time on my hands. Since I was day tripping, I couldn't drink.
I decided to write a ballad about the event.
Seeing that 70% of the folks there were archers, I made it an archer's
song. One of the few songs I've completed on site, It took about two hours.
It worked and I won the competition.
