Camp Widow's Lament

(by Lord Gorlan of the Red Lands, 1998)
(Tune: "I Think We're Alone Now" by Tommy James covered by Tiffany)

    Children behave
I'm trying to watch our friends fighting
    In the S-C-A
Children make it hard for socializing
So we're working just as hard as we can
Trying to feed the members of the Clan
      Minding the children
While the lords fight and play
I tell you, mothers have it rough
      At events, in the S-C-A
But I think they're asleep now
We can finally get the drums and start dancing around
    I think they're asleep now
Around the fires we can dance to that pounding sound.

    I Remember the days
When I could schmooze until daybreak
Don't take that the wrong way
I love my kids, but at times I could use a break

So we don't get much chance to leave the camp
The kids found puddles, now their clothes are damp
      Now they are whining
      And they've started to fight
But when they're dry and fed and bedded
We can finally play for the rest of the night
    I think they're asleep now
We can finally get the drums and start dancing around
    I think they're asleep now
Around the fires we can dance to that pounding sound.

    I know what I'll do
I'm going to start heavy weapons
And my Lord, as for you
    You'll get eye opening lesson

I'll get a chance to go out to fight and play
And you'll be the one with the kids all day
      I may get bruises
It's a small price to pay
      I've had them all week,
It's time for somebody else to sigh and say
(repeat 2x to fade:) I think they're asleep now
We can finally get the drums and start dancing around
    I think they're asleep now
Around the fires we can dance to that pounding sound.

History. The Story Behind this Song

Started out as Lady Melissa's Song, but the new title fit the humor better. I wrote this at Nebelungen III for a poor lady who seemed to be stuck at camp for most of the event. Her clan has a lot of kids. Both lords and ladies in the clan DO share the burdens of watching the kids and keeping the hoard fed. But on more than one occasion, you could hear the sighs of relief when kids were finally put down to bed and they could get out the drums and start dancing.
