The Order of the Old Battered Helm
(by Lord Gorlan of the Red Lands, 1998)
(Tune: "Cover of the Rolling Stones")
I'm a real stick swinger
I've got golden fingers
And I win most everywhere I go
I fight in tourneys, and I fight in wars
And when I die, it a makes a good show
I won all the awards that a fighter can get
In these western realms
Except the one I want most
From when I become a Ghost
I mean the "Order of the Old Battered Helm".
(Chorus:)
Old Battered Helm
Gonna put my mark upon that mother
Old Battered Helm
It's an order that's like no other
Old Battered Helm
I only want to win my place in
In the Order of the Old Battered Helm
I've got a beautiful Lady
Known as Mistress Katie
Who inspires me to fight
And it's been over ten years
Since I was made a Knight
I've got all the squires, that a Knight could need
So I never have to be alone
But I wont feel complete, until I win in defeat
That order that's worth more than a throne
Chorus:
I got the Order of Valor
And the Silver Mantle
And the Wreaths of Valor and Chivalry
I was once in the Queen's Guard
Before they Knighted me
I've been a Knight Bannerette
And had The Muchin' Great Clubbe
Because of my ferocity
My titles keep on growing
But there's a joy that I'm not knowing
Smashing that Old Battered Helm
Chorus:
The Story Behind this Song
In a conversation at the Celtic Sheep and Garter Raids, we were discussing
some of the more humorous awards given out in the Kingdom of the West, and
thinking it was a shame that Drachenwald (as a Kingdom) didn't have any. As
usually happens after such talks, I heard "Cover of the Rolling Stones" on
the radio and the title popped up. The Old Battered Helm is given out for a
Glorious Death. The helm is an old freon tank helmet. Each winner is
suppose to make his mark on the helm with the weapon of his or her choice
in front of witnesses. I am not sure if they still give it out.
